Warner Bros. Cancels Wonder Woman Game and Shuts Down Shadow of Mordor Studio
Monolith Productions, the studio behind the Middle-Earth: Shadow of War series, has been developing a Wonder Woman game since 2021. However, Warner Bros. Games has now announced the cancellation of the project and the closure of the studio as part of broader cost-cutting measures. These decisions follow the commercial failure of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in 2024 and the unsuccessful launch of the platform fighting game MultiVersus.
Alongside Monolith, Warner Bros. is also shutting down Player First Games, the studio responsible for MultiVersus, and WB San Diego, which had been working on an unannounced AAA title. The free-to-play platform title MultiVersus, originally launched in beta in 2022, struggled to regain player interest after its full release last year, despite being temporarily taken offline to be revamped for a fresh start.
The announcements comes after a Bloomberg report highlighted instability at Warner Bros. Games, largely due to Suicide Squad's $200 million loss and other multiplayer projects, such as Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, failing to attract a substantial audience. The report attributed some of the company's struggles to poor management and lack of clear direction.
The closures were communicated to staff in an email from Warner Bros. head of global strategy and operations, J.B. Perrette. According to excerpts published by Polygon, Perrette acknowledged the company's financial struggles, stating that the quality and market fit of recent releases had been disappointing.
"We need to and will do better for our fans first and foremost, and also because regaining that credibility is critical to us securing even more investment in Games in the years to come," Perrette reportedly wrote. "Getting our swagger back happens one high-quality game release at a time, and our financial credibility gets rebuilt one fiscal quarter at a time—delivering what we said we would deliver and no big negative surprises."
Monolith's Wonder Woman game reportedly underwent a reboot last year due to difficulties in integrating the studio's signature Nemesis System for NPC relationships, according to a Bloomberg report. Meanwhile, Rocksteady Studios is shifting focus back to single-player projects, potentially developing a new Batman game following the Suicide Squad failure. Additionally, longtime Warner Bros. Games president David Haddad recently announced his departure from the company.
